3 Steps to Increasing Employee Engagement

This is Hugh Blane here with the Monday Morning Mindset. I’m shooting this on the road, so please excuse the video quality.

I’m talking with you from the road because there is something that is weighing on my mind, and what’s weighing on my mind is the incredibly low levels of employee engagement that we are seeing in the world of work…frankly they are shockingly low.

You’ve heard the statistics. Gallup says that only 30% of employees are fully engaged. Harvard business review says it’s only 24%. In this competitive market, ladies and gentlemen, you cannot have your employees only 30% fully engaged. You need employees bringing their “A” game.

You know what else is shocking? The amount of time and money that companies are investing in chasing higher employee engagement scores. Ladies and gentlemen, you need to stop the insanity of chasing the scores, and you need to start asking this question: “what am I doing this week to become a magnet for fully engaged employees?” That’s the question. So, what can you do to create the kind of environment where employees run to work as opposed to running from work? I have three suggestions for you:

  1. Create an aspirational purpose. Create something that employees can fall in love with; an idea, dream, or hope.
  2. Make it personal. Allow employees to put their fingerprints all over it, so they can say, “yes, this is something I am really committed to.”
  3. Make it practical. That means ‘break it down.’ Come up with three to five things that you and your team will do this week toward achieving your aspirational purpose.

Now, with those three recommendations, let me ask you a few questions:

  • Does your mindset about employee engagement need to shift?
  • Does your leadership mindset need to shift?
  • Do you have employees who are not reaching their full potential? Possibly because they aren’t fully engaged?
